NU Lady Bulldogs’ Myla Pablo hits a spike against the block of UST Tigresses Mela Tunay and Marivic Meneses during their UAAP women’s volleyball game at the San Juan Arena yesterday. MIGUEL DE GUZMAN

MANILA, Philippines – National University wore down University of Santo Tomas in the decider and hacked out a 19-25, 25-11, 25-16, 21-25, 15-8 decision to stay in the Final Four hunt while ousting the Tigresses in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at The San Juan Arena yesterday.

Winning a second straight must-win game, the Lady Bulldogs moved up to joint fourth with the skidding UP Lady Maroons at 7-6.

Jaja Santiago fired 22 hits, including six service aces, but it was Myla Pablo who delivered the clutch hits in the fifth set where NU never trailed.

Pablo finished with 18 hits and 12 digs. Her  back-to-back kills put the Lady Bulldogs way ahead, 14-6.

In the other game, Far Eastern University, with Gyzelle Sy putting up 55 excellent sets, foiled UP, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14, to firm up its semis bid at 8-5.

Sy also had two service aces to finish with five points.

Aside from leading the Lady Tams in scoring with 19 points, Bernadeth Pons was superb on the other end of the floor with 21 digs while Remy Palma and Chin Basas tossed in 15 markers apiece for the Lady Tams, who seized solo third.

The Lady Tams close out their elims campaign against the also-ran Adamson Lady Falcons on Wednesday.

NU, meanwhile, will wrap up its elims assignment against La Salle, which was already assured of semis bonus, on April 13.

Reigning men’s champion Ateneo, meanwhile, made quick work of De La Salle, 25-14, 25-20, 25-21, to clinch the first twice-to-beat slot in the Final Four.

Marck Espejo and Josh Villanueva combined for 22 hits and the Blue Eagles had more blocks than the Green Spikers, 11-5, to book their 11th win in 12 matches.
