I’m looking for a book that provides deep, rigorous coverage of probability theory, but with an emphasis on material that is mostly useful outside of a mathematics department. I’ve heard “The Theory of Probability: Explorations and Applications” is pretty good, but I wanted to get some other suggestions.
For example, Achim Klenke’s book is way too much for me…it’s organized for theorem proving, not applications as far as I could tell. Also not a big fan of Durrett’s books from what I’ve perused, or Billingsley or Feller…again, too much of a mathematics research focus.

HOLLYWOOD – Everything Manny Pacquiao does from hereon could be his last as a boxer, whose rags-to-riches story the world has learned to love.
It’s always his last this or that.
“Maybe it’s my last time to run up the Hollywood sign,” said Pacquiao, the only boxer in history to win world titles in eight different weight divisions.
Pacquiao got up early Wednesday for his road work. Being a non-sparring day, he worked harder on the Bronson Canyons up the huge Hollywood sign.
It could be his last.
Pacquiao is in the final days of his training for his April 9 clash with American Timothy Bradley. After the fight, he will have to decide whether he’d retire or continue fighting.
Wednesday’s media day at the Wild Card Gym could also be his last as well.
Reporters started asking him questions like, “What would you miss most in boxing once you retire?” or “How would you like to be remembered?”
“I will miss Bob Arum,” said Pacquiao of his promoter, who sat by him as he faced questions from members of the press. His answer drew some laughter.
How he would like to be remembered, Pacquiao said, “I want you to remember me not only as a good person inside the ring but outside the ring.”
Pacquiao’s welterweight clash with Bradley will be their third since 2012. On paper, they’re dead even at one apiece. In the eyes of many, Pacquiao is up, 2-0.
“I hope this fight provides the answer to all the questions,” Pacquiao said just days ago.
“But this is one of the most important fights in my life. There are a lot of reasons why this is important. I don’t need to tell you,” he said.
Pacquiao, of course, wants to go out with a bang, the kind of bang that has made him the face of boxing for some time some years back.
He said he’s looking to knock Bradley out this time when in their first two fights, all of 24 rounds, he failed to even put the 32-year-old American down.
“Honestly, in my heart, if there’s a knockout, why not? That’s good for me. But what’s in my mind right now is to win convincingly. If I have the chance to finish,” he said.
Pacquiao hasn’t knocked anybody out in seven years, and he’s hoping that this time, he could.
“I will do my best. In my heart I want to win convincingly,” he said.
LAS VEGAS – A Fil-Am family in Las Vegas is grieving and seeking justice over a tragic accident caused by a drunk driver.
The accident occurred in Visalia, California over the weekend that took the life of 10-year-old Jamie Espinosa and her grandmother Angelita Espinosa.
Friends and family of the Espinosas are still in a state of shock as it was supposed to be a fun-filled Easter Sunday, but for the Espinosas, their road trip back to Las Vegas after visiting Yosemite National Park turned tragic.
The Espinosa family was to stop in Porterville, California, 71 miles southeast of Fresno, to meet with family and friends for the holiday.
But just before reaching their destination, their vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver, 25-year-old Cheyenne Wyllie.
“Jamie is such a sweet girl,” said family friend Sheila Jareno. “She likes to hug, play and joke around.”
Jamie’s dad George, who was driving, is still in a Fresno hospital fighting for his life while his wife Charlotte, who was seated in the passenger seat, suffered minor injuries.
Family friend Zandy Sam said George has been out of surgery and is still recuperating.
“They stented his aorta,” said Sam. “He has a punctured lung, broken ribs, his pelvic [bone] is fractured.”
Jareno added that Charlotte is feeling numb.
“She doesn’t know how to feel,” she said. “She’s not grieving yet. She keeps herself strong in such a way that she could give support to George.”
The crash was reported to be near Spacey Drive and Ave. 200 in the City of Visalia.
In a report by the California Highway Patrol, Wyllie failed to yield at a stop sign, striking the Espinosa family’s Honda Pilot on the driver’s side.
CHP arrested Wyllie after she was treated at the local hospital for a minor injury. She was charged with DUI with injury suspect.
Wyllie was booked that Saturday night but by Sunday afternoon was already out on a $100,000 bail bond.
Now, the family and friends of the Espinosas are calling on the community to demand justice for Lola Angelita’s and Jamie’s life–two lives that were taken away from them too soon.
“Really, you get discharged just like that in a snap, just like that?” said Jareno. “Where in fact in a snap you took two beautiful lives. We want justice to prevail.”
Meanwhile, friends and family of the Espinosas put up a GoFundMe campaign to help support the bereaving family.

US officials have expressed concern that an international court ruling expected in the coming weeks on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its South China Sea claims could prompt Beijing to declare an air-defense identification zone, or ADIZ, in the region, as it did in the East China Sea in 2013
Mr. Work told an event hosted by the Washington Post that the United States would not recognize such an exclusion zone in the South China Sea, just as it did not recognize the one China established in the East China Sea.
China claims most of the South China Sea, through which more than $5 trillion in global trade passes every year.
“We don’t believe they have a basis in international law, and we’ve said over and over [that] we will fly, sail, and go wherever international law allows,” Mr. Work said.
“We have spoken quite plainly to our Chinese counterparts and said that we think an ADIZ would be destabilizing. We would prefer that all of the claims in the South China Sea be handled through mediation and not force or coercion,” he said.
Mr. Work spoke as Chinese President Xi Jinping prepared to visit Washington for a nuclear security summit this week.
The United States has accused China of raising tensions in the South China Sea by its apparent deployment of surface-to-air missiles on a disputed island, a move China has neither confirmed nor denied.
China, for its part, has repeatedly accused the United States of militarizing the South China Sea through its freedom of navigation patrols in the region and the expansion of military alliances with countries such as the Philippines.
In February, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said his country’s South China Sea military deployments were no different from US deployments on Hawaii.
In a related development, Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio said on Thursday that if the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) fails to discipline China from violating international maritime laws, particularly in the disputed West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), it could lead to an arms race between the rival nations and their allies against China.
“[If the] UNCLOS cannot settle the most important maritime dispute today then it’s useless. People will not go to avail themselves of the remedies under UNCLOS. They will just buy warships, warplanes and anti-ship missiles to defend their maritime zones,” Mr. Carpio told journalists in a chance interview at Philippine National Police (PNP) General Headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
The UN international court at The Hague is expected to issue its verdict on the arbitration case filed by Manila against Beijing for the latter’s aggressive actions at some maritime territories in the West Philippine Sea that are well within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the country as prescribed by UNCLOS.
Beijing has been using force and coercion against claimants of the disputed sea, and even went on a reclamation binge converting reefs and atolls into artificial islands for apparently military purposes banking on its controversial “nine-dash line” that effectively corrals in about 90% of the entire sea.
Beijing did not participate in the arbitration, and even repeatedly said it will not honor any verdict against her.
Beijing’s behavior has been churning up regional tension that already drew international condemnation, and defense allies led by the United States have warned China of adverse repercussion.
However, Mr. Carpio believes Beijing doesn’t want another world chaos if she believes in world order, peace and stability.
Mr. Carpio said he just can’t think of a China wanting to own what is not hers and thereby creating tension with its neighbors by grabbing territories to the extent of violating agreements, such as the 1992 Code of Conduct of Parties, not to militarize the disputed sea and, worse, isolating herself by not adhering to international laws such as the UNCLOS.
“Well, this is the greatest threat to the Philippines since World War II, because a territory larger than our land area is being encroached on and seized from us by China,” he said.
Other countries threatened by China’s expansionist policy include Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.
“If the nine-dash line is enforced by China, Vietnam will lose more than us because we still have the Pacific side; we have our EEZ on the Pacific side. Vietnam has no more; their back is to the land. So, once Vietnam loses its EEZ facing the South China Sea, they don’t have an EEZ anymore. Same as Brunei,” Mr. Carpio pointed out.
“Every country will have to defend its own maritime zones through warships and warplanes. It means resources that we need for education, for social services, for infrastructure, will have to be diverted to acquire military assets. Otherwise, we lose by default. So a lot of balancing has to be done, we have to strengthen our alliances because we cannot acquire assets overnight, it takes time,” he said. — Reuters, Jaime Sinapit/InterAksyon.com

It is finally starting to feel like spring. We had a few teases, but the last few days have been sunny and warm. I love winter. This one was fairly mild and I think that they can be tougher than the really snowy ones. The grey days were hard on me. It zapped my energy and made me really unmotivated. I’m happy to see the sunshine again. I have a lot of work to catch up on.
One thing that I have been doing a lot of lately is cooking. Not cooking for the blog, but cooking dinner for my family. Sometimes when you cook for a living, you can lose some of the joy you once found in it. It has been nice to rekindle my love affair with cooking. I’m one of those people that actually looks forward to cooking, it is like my therapy.
Most weekends I make a big breakfast. On Saturday or Sunday, I like to make one big meal and call it a day. I usually make pancakes, waffles, or muffins, bacon and sausage, and eggs of some sort. Either a quiche or frittata. I clean up the kitchen and am off duty for the rest of the day. The kids make themselves something for dinner and they like being able to choose whatever they want. It works for all of us.
These muffins – Berry Crumb Muffins with Lemon Glaze are one of my favorites to make. They look a lot more complicated than they are. The crumb topping is 100% worth the extra step. Feel free to use whatever fruit you like. Blueberries, cherries, strawberries all work well in this muffin.

NICOSIA, Cyprus – The Cypriot ex-wife of an Egyptian accused of hijacking a plane in a bid to see her has said their marriage was hell and he had shown no interest in her or their children since they separated.
Marina Paraschou told the Phileleftheros newspaper that she had met Seif al-Din Mohamed Mostafa on the island when she was just 18 and he was 26, and that their 5 years of marriage were a “black period” of her life.
“Most of the media painted a picture of romance in which a man was trying to reach out to his estranged wife,” Paraschou said in comments published on Thursday, March 31.
“But that couldn’t be further from the truth and they would have a different opinion if they knew what he was really like.
“It was a black five years.”
Paraschou alleged that her ex-husband, now in custody as police weigh charges, had been violent and abusive towards her and their 3 children, had refused to work and had taken drugs.
Paraschou was brought to Larnaca airport by police during the 6-hour standoff that culminated in her ex-husband’s surrender.
But she said that was solely to confirm his identity and not to meet the demand he had made in a written note passed to authorities from the plane.
“They took me there to confirm it was his voice. To say they took me there to speak to Seif because he requested it in his letter is a lie,” she said.
Mostafa, 58, is accused of using a fake suicide belt to force the Alexandria-to-Cairo flight to divert to Cyprus, where he was remanded in custody on Wednesday for 8 days.
He faces possible charges of hijacking, kidnapping, reckless and threatening behaviour, and breaches of the anti-terror law.
Police prosecutor Andreas Lambrianou told the court that after his arrest, the suspect had told officers he acted out of desperation to see his ex-wife and children.
“What’s someone supposed to do when he hasn’t seen his wife and children in 24 years and the Egyptian government won’t let you?” Lambrianou quoted him as saying.
But Paraschou alleged that after they split up in 1990, Mostafa had been indifferent to the point of callousness towards her and their 3 children, one of whom died in an accident after their divorce.
Most of the 55 passengers on the hijacked EgyptAir flight were quickly released after it landed in Larnaca.
But some passengers and crew escaped only minutes before the standoff ended, including one uniformed man who was seen clambering out of a cockpit window and dropping to the ground. – Rappler.com

Nothing gives you a lower-sinking gut feeling than when you accidentally leave your $650+ iPhone sitting somewhere and forget about it, or when it ends up stolen.
Fortunately, good Samaritans now have an easier way to get in touch with you if your device is ever found thanks to a recent Cydia release called IfFound 3.
Indeed this jailbreak tweak is a new iteration of a tweak that has existed for ages, but it’s back and it’s ready for iOS 9, and in this review, we’ll show you exactly how it works.
IfFound 3 is a great way to let good Samaritans do their job after your iOS device is found in the wild if lost or stolen. The tweak adds a “Report Lost” button to the passcode keypad screen, as shown above, as well as to Control Center, which lets a good Samaritan get in touch with the device’s owner more easily in various ways.

So what happens when the good Samartian taps on one of those buttons? – They’ll be directed to a screen where they can choose to email you, call you, or text message you. In our example above, we show you the email option.
As you can see, the email option lets the good Samaritan type something out to you, and then send it to your configured email address. They don’t see your contact information directly from this interface, but any emails they send you will go to your email inbox. Similarly, the person would never see your phone number, but any text messages or phone calls would still go through to you either to your Messages app or Phone app.
Obviously, this means you’ll have to set up contact information in the tweak’s settings so that the good Samaritan is directed to the proper form of contact to get the device back to you.
Speaking of setting up IfFound 3, you can launch the Settings app when you install the tweak and you’ll find a new preferences pane for it. Here, you can set up sending stealthy information to a contact method of your choice, as well as configure the buttons a good Samaritan can use to get in touch with you among other things.

After everything has been set up satisfactorily to your liking, I would suggest you try the tweak for yourself by sending yourself some test emails, texts, and calls via the IfFound 3 tweak, just to make sure you typed everything in correctly.
I think IfFound 3 is a great and intuitive way to track down your iOS device when it’s lost or stolen. Although Apple’s Find My iPhone app will let you track your device on a Mac, IfFound 3 goes a step further, giving you access to pictures and screenshots when the device is being used in an unauthorized way, and even lets a good Samaritan get in touch with you more quickly.
I would personally recommend having the passcode keypad-style button enabled, as a good Samaritan, especially one that doesn’t know how to use iOS because they come from another smartphone background, may not be as likely to launch Control Center.
Obviously, this tweak keeps honest people honest; if someone chooses to be dishonest, which in this day and age can be quite often, they could ignore the Report Lost button altogether and go about their business. With that being said, you have to consider for yourself whether or not this is a type of insurance you want to spend the money on or not. In many cases, it could be a good idea.
Also, in terms of comparing this tweak to Find My iPhone, Find My iPhone is still a useful tool that lets you track your lost or stolen device, but Find My iPhone doesn’t give a good Samaritan these contact mediums to get in touch with you when your device is found, so they’ll compliment each other nicely.
IfFound 3 makes it a lot easier on someone who finds your device to let you know it’s in safe hands and where to get it, but it can still always be ignored by a thief who chooses to be dishonest.
We can tell the tweak had a lot of time and effort put into it, but it’s always a gamble no matter how nice a jailbreak tweak looks on whether or not someone will actually use it. Nevertheless, IfFound 3 is available in Cydia’s BigBoss repository for just $0.99 if you’re interested in trying it.

Today (or yesterday), Instagram has released the latest update of the app; available on google play and apps store. Apparently I haven’t update my devices to the latest version just yet.
You see here, I got a habit of delaying the updating activities for any apps installed on my electronic devices. The reasons might be, yes, I don’t like spending my internet quota on these activities, and b because I usually spend my time reading reviews written by those immediate-updaters (I named them as such to refer to those who are the first one to update the apps to the latest version) before I start thinking whether to update any particular applications or otherwise.
*Note how many times I used the word ‘update’ in one single paragraph LOL.
Okay now let’s go back to the purpose of I’m writing this entry. Last night, while I was scrolling down my Instagram feed, I saw a photo uploaded by Instagram itself. What actually caught my attention wasn’t the photo’s caption but rather the comments posted by users. Lots of people riled up to criticize or give out their feedback on the latest version of the apps. Most common comments I’ve read are
To be honest, I really don’t like the new Instagram’s features of having our timeline no longer sorted chronologically as it should have been because that’s what a timeline is all about. I mean, come on! It maybe the best posts on my timeline but perhaps not according to my preference. The idea of turning on any users’ notifications is somehow dissed me. I’m sorry Instagram.
But thanks to them (the updaters) for providing such helpful and thoughtful comments or reviews regarding the apps because
It is important to note that an update doesn’t necessarily mean that every glitch or bug found in the previous version of a particular apps is ‘gone’ gone, forever disappear or whatever the term you’re using. Basically an update means the apps has been tweaked in any ways to suit and satisfy users’ needs. That’s the reason why for an apps/ software, the version number comes after their name. eg: Instagram v7.19.0 < the latest version of Instagram.
My friend texted me about the disappearance of Clear Search History button on Instagram. She updated the apps this afternoon and somehow couldn’t find the named button. A few buttons are missing and I hope everyone’s handling this kind of situation very well and wisely.
But hey, there’s always a trick to get the previous version of any apps back installed on your devices. If your device is running on Android platform, try to google ‘instagram’s version (ie: instagram version 17) .apk file free download’, download the file to your device and install it but make sure to allow the installation of apps from sources other than the Google Play Store on your device. (in the device setting)
If your device is running on iOS platform, replace the .apk file with .ipa file instead before googling them. To install any .ipa file on your iOS devices, I would recommend you to use iFunBox (a software available for PCs) and be sure that your device is connected to your PC to do so.
